Understanding IUI

IUI is one of the most commonly recommended fertility treatments for couples trying to conceive naturally but facing challenges. It is a quick, minimally invasive procedure that enhances the chances of pregnancy. Specially prepared sperm is placed directly into the uterus during ovulation to improve the chances of fertilisation. The procedure is painless, takes just a few minutes, and improves the chances of conception for many couples.

Who it suits

IUI is ideal for couples experiencing

  • Unexplained infertility, where the cause is not clear
  • Mild male infertility: low sperm count or slow-moving sperm
  • Irregular ovulation, for women with PCOS or hormonal issues
  • Cervical mucus issues, which IUI bypasses
  • Same-sex couples or single women using donor sperm

How it works

The IUI process, step by step

  1. Step

    01

    Ovulation monitoring

Your cycle is tracked to pinpoint the best time for insemination. Medications may be used to stimulate ovulation.

  2. Step

    02

    Sperm preparation

The healthiest sperm are separated and concentrated in a lab to maximise the chances of fertilisation.

Is IUI right for you

IUI is an excellent option for those who have mild male infertility issues such as low sperm motility or count, women with ovulation problems that make it harder for sperm to reach the egg, those using donor sperm, or couples with unexplained infertility where no obvious cause is found.

IUI may not be suitable for those with severe male infertility, blocked fallopian tubes, or certain other conditions. These are assessed at your evaluation.

IUI compared with IVF
TreatmentBest suited toInvasivenessSuccess rate
IUIMild male infertility, unexplained infertility, ovulation issues, donor spermOutpatient, no anaesthesia, 5 to 10 minutes10 to 20 percent per cycle
IVFBlocked tubes, severe infertility, repeated IUI failuresInjections, sedated retrieval, transfer40 to 60 percent per cycle

IUI is often the first step before IVF and works well for many couples, particularly with mild male-factor or unexplained infertility. Most doctors recommend 3 to 6 cycles of IUI before considering IVF.
