Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a type of artificial insemination that can be used to treat infertility. Sperm is collected and then washed and concentrated before being placed directly into the uterus around the time your ovary releases one or more eggs that could be fertilised.
The goal of IUI treatment in Bangalore is for sperm to travel into the fallopian tube and fertilise an egg, leading to pregnancy. IUI can be done with or without fertility medications depending on the reasons for infertility.
Should you worry?
The intrauterine insemination procedure is simple and safe, with a low chance of serious complications. However, there is a very small risk involved in developing an infection. In some cases, the process of placing the catheter can cause minor vaginal bleeding; however, this usually doesn’t have any effect on the pregnancy itself.
Although IUI doesn’t usually cause a multiple pregnancy, the risk significantly goes up when coordinated with ovulation-inducing medications. A multiple pregnancy is more dangerous than a single one, carrying risks such as early labour and low birth weight. Your doctor will discuss all these risks with you before your IUI treatment in Bangalore.
What to expect
The IUI process itself only takes a minute or two. The procedure is quick and easy, with most appointments taking around 15-20 minutes from start to finish.
After your insemination, you will lie on your back for a short while. You can then get up, get dressed, and go about your day as normal. Some women experience light spotting for one or two days after the procedure is complete.
Your doctor will likely want you to come back for a blood test to detect pregnancy hormones after fertilisation has occurred. If you don’t become pregnant after trying IUI, you might want to give it another go before moving on to other fertility treatments. Often, the same therapy is used for three to six months in order to maximise the chances of pregnancy.
